Society today has a lot of ideas about what it means to be a man, but a lot of those ideas are actually just consumerism and politics in disguise. Being a man is different for each dude, but at the end of the day, it’s about using your abilities to care for and protect others. We talked to counselors, therapists, and relationship experts about how to be a better man, and here’s what they had to say:
- Professional counselor Josh Spurlock, MA, LPC, CST, says that, “Culturally, for men to be emotional, is, has been labeled as weakness...all human beings are emotional creatures...learn how to deal with that fact...to engage that emotional part of self, and to allow that to guide you in relationship and in life. And thus be able to have more joy in life, less stress, more peace, lots of good things come from being emotionally attuned to yourself.”[1]
- Professional therapist Moshe Ratson, MFT, PCC, says, “If a man can talk about emotion, in their mind, it’s kind of conflicted with their manhood as if men should not be vulnerable or as men should not be soft or gentle...you can still be masculine if you are having soft attitude...many people confuse is that they confused confidence with masculinity because you can be gentle, you can be kind but you can still be confident.”[2]
- Dating and relationship coach Mark Rosenfeld says that being a man means that you “have passions that you love, and follow them...exercise and take care of your body...Be courageous. And take action with women...if you like a woman, ask her out. If you're on the date, go for the kiss. You know, if you want to sleep with her, invite her home. As a man, you women are looking for courage, and they're looking for directness.”[3]
- Confidence and communication coach Eddy Baller says, “Starting to be more confident is really about getting practice doing things that confident men do. So, for example, just starting conversations with women is one really great way to train yourself...you have to get in public, talk to strangers, do things that make you uncomfortable...you have to kind of put yourself through the fire and learn how to do it properly hands on.”[4]
- Relationship advisor Erika Kaplan tells us that “A modern man acting chivalrous means going back to some of the basics of chivalry...acting traditionally chivalrous is actually how modern men stand out...calls instead of texts, or walks on the outside of them when they're walking down the street, or opens doors for them, or picks up the check.”[5]
