Tattoo Design, Placement, and Aftercare Tips from Experts

PDF download Download Article
  1. Tattoo Artist María Fernández González says, “Try to avoid putting many things on the same design because many times, people are getting their first tattoo and they want to represent everything in one tattoo…And if you put so many things, the composition is going to look very bad.” In her experience, “Less is more. So, just concentrate on a few things that work together, and that's it. And you have time to get a second tattoo if you want to represent something else.”[18]
  2. 2
Work with your tattoo artist to design your tattoo. Tattoo Artist Burak Moreno explains, “You can collect the designs you like as reference images and give them to [the] artist…and let them design for you.” He adds that professional tattoo artists will use their experience, plus the size and location you want, to design something personalized that fits your body.[19]
    • Tattoo Artist Grant Lubbock says, “The more willing you are, as a client, to work with the artist and let your artist guide you through the tattoo process, you will wind up with a better tattoo. So if the client can let go and be a little bit flexible with control and where the tattoo's going, how it's going to be placed, and all that stuff, overall, the tattoo will be much better.[20]
  3. 3
Select a tattoo placement based on how visible you want it to be. Tattoo Artist Michelle Myles says, “First off, think about how visible you would want [it] to be, and generally, even though it's very trendy right now, we don't recommend that people get tattooed on their hands or their neck because those are very visible places and there might come a time that you don't want to have a tattoo in such a visible place.”[21]
    • Tattoo Artist Katherine D. Vargas agrees, saying, “A lot of people think about their jobs, [and] think about it if they want to see [the tattoo] every day of their life…It's just how visibl[y] you want to look tattooed.”[22]
    • Vargas adds, “Every time a client asks me where they want to put something, I always say the inner arm if they're indecisive. I would never say the outer first because that's a huge commitment.” She also explains that the arms are a less painful spot to get a tattoo than other areas of the body.[23]
    • Myles advises, “Get it where you really want it. You don't want to make the decision based on how much it hurts because it's not going to make that much of a difference from one place to another, especially for smaller tattoos…don't let outside factors really be the determining sort of thing because the pain will go away, but you're still going to be stuck with the placement.”[24]
  4. 4
Choose a tattoo artist who specializes in the style or type of tattoo you want. Search for artists in your area and check out their portfolios. Lubbock says, “Look for clean linework, look for solid shading, look for smooth gradient shading, and look at consistency throughout pieces.” He adds, “It's a good idea to check reviews, go online [and look at] social media, Yelp, [and] Google.”[25]
  5. Your tattoo artist will give you specific instructions, so make sure to follow them! Lubbock says, “The most important part is washing a tattoo with antibacterial soap. So you want to wash twice a day and hydrate three to four times a day with ointment.”[26] Wash your hands before washing your tattoo, then let it air-dry and apply an unscented moisturizer or ointment—your tattoo artist will recommend a specific brand.
