Bungo Stray Dogs 101
Bungo Stray Dogs (BSD) is a Japanese manga series written by Kaska Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa. BSD follows the members of the Armed Detective Agency as they protect the city of Yokohama, Japan, from the series’ main antagonists, the Port Mafia, as well as other adversaries.
The characters in BSD are based on influential writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and they each have supernatural powers based on these writers’ works. Here are a few of the main characters that appear in the series:
- Atsushi Nakajima: Named after the Japanese author Atsushi Nakajima (May 5, 1909 - December 4, 1942), known for his works The Moon Over the Mountain and Light, Wind, and Dreams.
- Osamu Dazai: Named after the Japanese author Osamu Dazai (June 19, 1909 - June 13, 1948), known for his works The Setting Sun and No Longer Human.
- Ryūnosuke Akutagawa: Named after Japanese short story writer Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (March 1, 1892 - July 24, 1927).
- Chūya Nakahara: Named after Japanese poet Chūya Nakahara (April 29, 1907 - October 22, 1937).
- Doppo Kunikida: Named after the Japanese novelist and writer of romantic poetry, Doppo Kunikida (August 30, 1871 - June 23, 1908).
- Ranpo Edogawa: Named after the Japanese critic and author of mystery and thriller fiction, Ranpo Edogawa (October 21, 1894 - July 28, 1965).
- Jun'ichirō Tanizaki: Named after author Jun'ichirō Tanizaki (July 24, 1886 - July 30, 1965), who was considered to be one of the most prominent writers in modern Japanese literature.
- Kenji Miyazawa: Named after the Japanese novelist, poet, and author of children’s literature, Kenji Miyazawa (August 27, 1896 - September 21, 1933).
- Akiko Yosano: Named after Japanese author, poet, feminist, and pacifist Akiko Yosano (December 7, 1878 - May 29, 1942).
- Fukuzawa Yukichi: Named after the Japanese author, educator, and philosopher Fukuzawa Yukichi (January 10, 1835 - February 3, 1901).
- Kyōka Izumi Named after Japanese novelist, writer, and playwright Izumi Kyōka (November 4, 1873 - September 7, 1939).
