Understanding Therians, Paleotherians, & More

Therians (or therianthropes) are people who spiritually or psychologically identify as non-human animals. Rather than adopting a persona, therians feel that their soul is tied to a specific animal, and that their identity is involuntarily matched to that creature. There are also different types of therians (including paleotherians), so there are many complex layers to this community that are beneficial to learn about and understand. Fortunately, wikiHow partnered with therians and therian experts to explain more about therianthropy:

  • Therian Expert Reagan Conley affirms that “‘therian’…is anyone who identifies as a non-human animal. So, if you identify as an animal and feel you are an animal, regardless if you sometimes feel more connected to being a human, as long as you like you’re the animal and your theriotype, you can use the label therian….If you feel the label ‘therian’ fits and is comfortable for you, then you can be a therian.[1]
  • Therian Phenic Fox explains that furries and therians “are completely different sides. Furry is a choice, and it’s a hobby you can use and a label used by choice. Therians are an actual identity. Therians involuntarily identify as a non-human animal. That’s the main difference…It’s not a spirit animal. I think that’s the most common misconception.”[2]
  • Therian Safiri clarifies that “there are lots of different kinds of therians. There are paleotherians, or therians that have extinct therian types. There are cladotherians, or therians that identify as entire clades of animals. There are lycanthropes…someone who clinically believes they can transform into a werewolf…There are a lot of different ways of identifying as an animal.”[3]
