Start by cleaning the filter. You should clean your dishwasher filter about every 3 months or so by rinsing it under running water.

Some older dishwashers may not have removable filters. Try contacting Maytag for information on your specific model or look for the user manual online.
  • Question
My dishwasher hasn't worked in months. It stinks terribly and has mold in it. I want to have it repaired, but how can I clean it first? It doesn't fill, so I can't run it.

Spray or wipe vinegar in there and let it set for around 15 minutes. It will be strong, but it will help to stop the mold from spreading further. Wear gloves and any other protective attire you prefer (like a face mask). After that's set, go in with some Dawn dish soap and a scrubber. Scrub for a few minutes, and keep rinsing your sponge with hot water.

Yes, it can be dangerous if there is a significant amount of mold. If the entire dishwasher is heavily moldy, you should consider disposing of it and replacing it rather than attempting to clean it.
