  • Question
If people are my friends, how are they made mutual friends?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
A mutual friend means that you share the same friend with another person. For example, say you are friends with Bob and Sally, and Bob and Sally are also friends with each other. When you look on either Bob or Sally's profile, you will see that the other friend will be a mutual friend, because you both have the same friend.

You don't "need" friends to be mutual friends, although it helps strangers to trust you more if you are friends with someone they know. The easiest way to build mutual friends is to look at who Facebook claims are mutual. Look at the person's profile to make sure they are someone you might like, then Friend them. You can also search for people you know, such as real friends from school or a group.

There is no "mutual friends page" on Facebook. Facebook sometimes presents to a user friends you may know, who happen to have mutual friends as you have. Let's use a class of 30 students as an example.... not all 30 will be friends with each other. Maybe Sally and Julie are friends. You and Julie are friends on Facebook. So Sally is a potential mutual friend. If Sally is friends with 4 other people, and you are friends with 2 of the same people, those 2 are mutual friends between you and Sally. Mutual means nothing except "You are friends with someone who is also friends with someone else who might be someone you want to be friends with too." Check profile before friending.

You cannot label anyone as a "mutual friend". Facebook does that through Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs. You can look up someone you know who also knows someone else you know-- all of you would be mutual friends.
