Kind & Loving Three words describe my father best: kind and loving. Dad always put his family first and was always there for us when we needed him. He was the patriarch of our family and always so proud of his children and grandchildren. In my mind, I can still hear him bragging about our accomplishments to anyone who would listen. Dad, we love you, and we will miss you immensely.

Man of Faith Those who knew and loved my dad know he was a man of faith and instilled that in all of his children, especially me. He was a strong pillar of our church community. In addition to his faith, Dad was also a very hard worker. My father was a selfless man and always put others before himself. We will all miss him dearly, but none more than me. I love you, Dad. And as you journey into the light, know that our blessings will always be with you.

His Encouragement Words cannot express my sense of loss nor fill the emptiness I feel inside. My dad was the most gentle and loving man I have ever known. He would do anything for us and always went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and healthy. Dad was always so proud of us and our accomplishments, no matter how small. I know that he is now at peace and free from pain, but I will miss him dearly every day for the rest of my life.

A Man of Integrity There is not enough time or words to express how much my father meant to me. But if I had to say who he was in one sentence, I’d say Dad was a man of great integrity. He always did the right thing, even when it wasn’t popular or easy. He was a role model to my [children] and me, and a mentor to many others. I will miss him deeply.
  5. 5
A Good Man To say my father was a good man would be an understatement. He was an amazing man who always put others first. I never once saw him lose his temper or say an unkind word to anyone. He was always patient and kind, even when dealing with the most difficult people. I am so proud to be his son, and I will miss him dearly.[1]
  6. 6
Generous Spirit Dad gave with the enthusiasm of someone who’d discovered a superpower. He was the guy who’d stop to help strangers change flat tires, who’d show up with his truck when someone needed to move, who’d listen to your problems for hours without ever making it about himself. His generosity wasn’t random acts of kindness—it was a way of life. He taught us that you don’t have to be wealthy to be generous, you just have to pay attention to the needs around you and be willing to help however you can.
  7. 7
The Wise Counselor People sought Dad’s advice on everything from career decisions to relationship problems. His wisdom came from asking the right questions rather than having all the answers. Dad taught us that the best advice often comes in the form of helping someone discover what they already know in their heart. He’d say, ‘I can’t tell you what to do, but I can help you figure out what feels right to you.'
  8. 8
My Mentor Dad had this incredible ability to see potential in people before they saw it in themselves. What made him such an effective mentor wasn’t his expertise—though he had plenty—it was his genuine belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute. He’d say, ‘My job isn’t to make you another version of me—it’s to help you become the best version of yourself.'[2]

How to Write a Tribute for a Deceased Dad

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Plan your tribute using a central theme. Focus on 1 of 2 aspects of who he was. It might be how confident he was professionally, what a great listener he was to you and the family, or his sense of humor or adventure. Once you know the main theme of your tribute, it’ll be easier to write and share it with others. Additional themes include:
    • His favorite things (food, music, travel)
    • Hobbies or sports
    • Storytelling abilities
    • A craft or trade
    • His role as a mentor
    • Military service
  2. 2
Celebrate who he was as a person. Describe his personality and what made him unique, like his sense of humor, strength, and humor. Mention any ways he liked to spend his time, i.e., passions, interests, or hobbies. Focus on describing what most brought him joy.
    • My dad had the best sense of humor. It was so easy for him to make us laugh.
    • He loved spending his free time fishing. I’m so thankful he taught me how to fish.
    • He knew more about history than anyone I’ve ever met, including my teachers.
  3. 3
Share positive memories about him. Share a short anecdote or 2 that gives readers or listeners an insight into who your dad was. It might focus on how he helped you through a challenging time or a memorable experience you had. Start by "thinking about a happy time and take yourself back to that memory… What are the feelings that come back to you, and what do you remember the most? Write down a few things that come to mind,” says Tenzer.[3]
    • My dad once stayed up late into the night to talk me through a breakup.
    • We spent a father-son weekend at the cabin, though neither one of us could cook.
    • I remember seeing his proud face in the crowd at my college graduation.
  4. 4
Speak about the life lessons and impact he had. Concentrate on the difference your dad made in your life. Let others know the role he played during your childhood and as an adult. Express how important he will always be to you.
    • My dad taught me what the words patience and understanding really mean.
    • He was the reason I never stopped believing in my dreams.
    • Dad will always be the most important mentor I could ever hope to have.
  5. 5
Re-state your love and appreciation for him. Finish your tribute by telling your dad how much you love him and how much you’ll always miss him. Close with a loving phrase, quote, or poem as a way to say thank you.
    • You were my mentor, confidante, and best friend. I miss you so much, Dad.
    • You were my guide long before I knew I needed one. And even in your absence, you still lead me.
    • Thanks for always letting me be me, Dad.

    • This life without you isn’t smaller, it’s bigger with all the ways I’ve grown because of you.
    • “I am not ashamed to say that no man I ever met was my father's equal, and I never loved any other man as much.” — Hedy Lamarr
    • One year, a thousand memories, and an eternity of love. I miss you deeply, Dad.
    • A daughter without her father is a woman forever reaching for his hand in every moment she needs grounding, comfort, or courage.
    • Being your daughter was a gift. Losing you is the ache of holding a gift that no longer unwraps in hugs and laughter.
    • The hardest part of losing you isn’t the silence. It’s becoming the man I wish you were still here to see.
    • You were my guide long before I knew I needed one. And even in your absence, you still lead me.
