Christmas Traditions from Around the World

Watching Christmas movies is one of our favorite ways to celebrate the holiday season, but let's take a look at some popular holiday traditions from all over the world:

  • Japan: KFC for dinner. That's right: Kentucky Fried Chicken is a popular holiday meal in Japan! Why? It all started in the 1970s, when KFC Japan's first manager, Takeshi Okawara, came up with the genius idea to market KFC as an affordable Christmas dinner. The idea took off and remains a major tradition!
  • Australia: A family cricket match. While we often associate Christmas with snow, the holiday actually falls smack-dab in the middle of the summer for people in Australia! If you want to celebrate Christmas like they do down under, you'll join the fam outside for a rousing game of cricket.
  • Finland: Honoring deceased loved ones. Honoring the dead is a big part of the holiday season in Finland, and on Christmas Eve, families visit cemeteries where they light candles for loved ones who have passed on.
  • Venezuela: Roller skating. In Venezuela, Christmas is a time for joy, community, and lively celebration, which includes bells, firecrackers, and even roller skating to early-morning Mass!
  • South Africa: Picnicking. The average temperature at Christmastime in South Africa is between 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit! As a result, instead of the roasts, soups, and casseroles we often associate with the holiday season, South Africans have a tradition of taking to the great outdoors and enjoying a picnic for Christmas.
