More About Tomb Raider’s Characters & Unified Timeline

As of the 2025 Game Awards, the Tomb Raider franchise is being organized into a single, “Unified Timeline.” That basically means they’re fitting Netflix’s Legend of Lara Croft series, the most recent Survivor Trilogy games from Square Enix, future Tomb Raider titles, and as many past games as possible together like puzzle pieces under one, singular timeline.

There are so many Tomb Raider games—released over multiple decades—that it can feel like you’re experiencing twenty different versions of the same character, but now, all of those adventures are being woven into a cohesive series of events. Pretty cool, right?

Among other things, it means Tomb Raider fans will most definitely get more content in the (near) future, which is an exciting prospect! And, in the meantime, we can go over some of the most important characters established in this unified timeline:

  • Lara Croft - Our heroine and protagonist! Lara is an archaeologist-turned-adventurer who searches for (often mythical) artifacts and accepts increasingly dangerous jobs.

Allies

  • Jonah Maiava - Lara’s close friend. Jonah has accompanied Lara as a traveling companion since the events of Tomb Raider (2013).
  • Samantha Nishimura - Lara’s best friend. The pair were close when they got stranded on Yamatai, but later drifted apart (mainly due to Lara pushing people away). They reunited during the events of The Legend of Lara Croft.
  • Zip - Lara’s friend and “guy in the chair.” He’s a technology expert and hacker whom Lara met in college.
  • Abigaile Ortiz - A mechanic and pilot from Peru who later married Jonah.
  • Conrad Roth - Lara’s mentor (and Camilla’s father). He led the Yamatai expedition and died saving Lara’s life.
  • Camilla Roth - Conrad’s daughter. She and Lara were close friends, and later reconnected as adults; she works for Interpol.
  • Winston Smith - A butler for the Croft family during Lara’s childhood. He returns to work at Croft Manor after Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Enemies

  • Charles Devereaux - The antagonist in The Legend of Lara Croft season one, determined to find and use the Peril Stones against an organization called The Light.
  • Mathias - A main antagonist in Tomb Raider (2013), having been manipulated by Himiko into leading the Solarii after being stranded on Yamatai.
  • Trinity - A shadowy organization dedicated to controlling the fate of humanity by finding and using ancient artifacts.
  • Himiko - The long-dead “Sun Queen” of Yamatai and an antagonist in Tomb Raider (2013), as well as one of Sam’s distant ancestors.
  • Mila - The leader of Pithos and main antagonist in season two of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
  • Ana - A senior Trinity agent, and formerly close to Lara (having been involved with Lara’s father).
  • Pedro Dominguez - Leader of the High Council of Trinity and main antagonist in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
