Are you trying to recover your lost phone via Find My (formerly called “Find My iPhone”)? This feature was introduced to help iPhone owners keep track of their lost phones. There’s no Find My app for desktop, but you can use the Find My service by logging into iCloud in a browser and going to the Find Devices page. This wikiHow article teaches you how to sign in and use Find My from a computer. We’ll also provide troubleshooting tips in case you can’t see your iPhone’s location on the Find Devices page.

Signing Into Find My iPhone on Desktop

  • To access Find My iPhone on a computer, go to www.icloud.com/find and log in with the same Apple Account you use on your iPhone.
  • Select your iPhone in the All Devices menu to display information about it and see its location on the map (if available).
  • If your iPhone is online, you can make it play an alert sound. You can also mark it as lost, erase it, or remove it from your list of devices.
  • Find My iPhone will only work if you have Find My and Location Services enabled on your phone.

Accessing Find My iPhone

  1. Go to www.icloud.com/find in a web browser. You can sign in to Find My (or Find Devices) from a browser on any computer.
    • There is no Find My app for desktop, but you can access the same service from the iCloud website.
  2. Make sure you use the same Apple Account information that you use on your iPhone. You might also have the option to log in with a passkey (e.g., use Touch ID on your computer to sign in) if your computer has your Apple Account information saved.[1]
    • If you're asked to enter the code that was sent to another trusted device but don't have that device, click the Find Devices button at the bottom of the window to bypass this step.

  3. If you only have one device, wait a few moments for its location to appear on the map. If you have several devices, click your iPhone in the All Devices menu on the left side of the screen. You might need to click the button next to the All Devices header to expand the list of devices.[2]
    • Once you select a device, its location will be highlighted on the map, and a window will open on the left side of the screen displaying options and information about the device.

Using Find My iPhone

  1. The Find Devices map will give you a general location for your phone if it’s online. For instance, if your iPhone is somewhere at your home address, the map will show that (although it won’t help you pinpoint exactly where). Depending on your Find My settings, you might be able to see the last known location of your iPhone even if it’s offline.[3]
    • For offline devices, the last recorded location will only be displayed for up to 24 hours. After that, the menu will display a “No Location Found” message for that device.
      • You can view an offline device’s last known location for up to 7 days if you enable the Find My network. In your iPhone’s Settings app, tap your name and go to Find My > Find My iPhone and toggle on Find My network.
  2. You can use the “Play Sound” option when you have placed your iPhone somewhere nearby, but you don’t remember where. Clicking on Play Sound will make your device vibrate at first, then play a series of increasingly loud alerts. Follow the sounds to find your iPhone.[4]
    • If you find your iPhone and unlock it, the sound will automatically stop playing.
    • If you don’t find your phone, the sound will stop playing on its own after about 2 minutes.
    • If your iPhone is offline, the alert will sound next time it’s connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
    • You’ll get an email message notifying you about the Find My alert.
  3. “Lost Mode” is helpful when you think you have lost your iPhone. When this is enabled, it will lock your device. To enable it, select your iPhone and click Lost iPhone. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish enabling Lost Mode. You’ll be given the option to add a contact number and message for anyone who finds the phone. Once you’ve added that information (if you want–it’s entirely optional), click Activate to turn Lost Mode on.[5]
    • If you find your iPhone, you can turn off Lost Mode simply by unlocking the iPhone with your regular passcode. You might also need to verify with Face ID or Touch ID if you have Stolen Device Protection enabled.
    • You can also turn off Lost Mode by selecting your iPhone on the Find Devices page and clicking Lost > Stop Lost Mode > Stop Lost Mode.
  4. If your iPhone is offline and there’s no location data available, you can enable this option to get an email alert in case it comes back online. Click the toggle switch next to Notify When Found in the device menu.[6]
  5. When you think you have lost your iPhone and won’t get it back, you can use this function as a safety measure. This is also a helpful option if you’ve forgotten your passcode and need to reset your iPhone remotely. “Erase” will erase all the data, including your applications, messages, multimedia, contacts, settings, etc., stored in your iPhone so that no one can access or misuse your personal data. To erase your iPhone, click Erase and follow the onscreen prompts to complete the process.[7]
    • If you’ve sold your iPhone, given it away, or want to remove it from your list of devices for some other reason, click Remove instead.

Troubleshooting

PDF download Download Article
  1. The most likely reason for this issue is that you don’t have Find My enabled on your iPhone. It’s also possible that you aren’t logged into the same Apple Account that you use on your iPhone, so double-check your login credentials or try a different account if you have more than one.
    • If you do manage to find your iPhone, here’s how to make sure it shows up on Find My/Find Devices in the future:
      • Open your iPhone’s Settings app and tap your name.
      • Tap Find My. It’s in the second group of options.
      • Make sure Share My Location is toggled on.
      • Tap Find My iPhone and toggle on the switch next to Find My iPhone.
      • To make sure your iPhone is findable even when it’s offline or turned off, toggle on Find My network.
      • You can also enable Send Last Location to ensure that your iPhone automatically updates its current location in Find My when the battery is critically low.
  2. If your iPhone is powered off or has been offline for a certain amount of time, there might not be any location data available. A message like this could also mean that your iPhone doesn’t have location services turned on.[8]
    • If you manage to locate your iPhone, here’s how to improve your chances of displaying its location in the future:
      • Go to Settings > your name > Find My and make sure Share My Location is toggled on.
      • In the same menu, tap Find My iPhone and make sure Find My Network and Send Last Location are enabled. With these options on, your iPhone’s last known location should be displayed for up to 7 days even if your iPhone goes offline.
      • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is toggled on at the top of the menu.
      • Check your Stolen Device Protection settings. If you have Stolen Device Protection enabled on your iPhone and you used your iPhone to change your Apple Account password while you were in an unfamiliar location, your location data might be hidden from Find My.
        • To turn off Stolen Device Protection or change your settings, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Stolen Device Protection (at the bottom of the menu). From there, you can toggle off Stolen Device Protection if it’s on.
  3. If you know your iPhone is nearby but you can’t hear the alert sound, give it a minute. The Find My alert starts out as a soundless vibration, then changes to an increasingly loud alarm tone. This gives you a chance to find your phone if it’s very close by (e.g., fallen behind your bed) without immediately making a loud, disruptive noise.

If you're asked to enter the code that was sent to another trusted device, but don't have that device, you can select '''Find iPhone''' under the "Or get quick access to" header. Failing that, you need to contact customer support for more help and set up multiple devices for your 2FA.
  • Question
If I "Erase the device" and log into my iCloud from another device, will everything I previously had show up on my new device?
    Darlene Antonelli
    Darlene Antonelli
    Community Answer
If you select to "Erase the device," the phone will be erased and connecting it to an iCloud account will not restore that data. However, data from your iCloud account will show up on your iPhone when you connect it (like your Apple ID)
