This article will show you how to get Zapdos in Pokémon Fire Red.

  1. If you don't yet have HM Fly, obtain it.

  3. Proceed counterclockwise to reach him.

    • You'll need 30+ Ultra Balls. Reset to your save point if you accidentally faint him or run out of Poké Balls.
    • The only attacking move Zapdos knows is Drill Peck. This means he is easier to catch if you bring a Pokémon who resists Flying attacks. Geodude, Graveler or Golem are perfect for this as they're Rock type, have high defense, and are immune to Thunder Wave. Give them Leftovers and have them use Defense Curl a few times, if you like.
    • Bring Zapdos' health down to the red and apply a status condition such as sleep or paralyze before attempting to catch him. Sleep and freeze are most effective, but are difficult to use because they're not permanent. A Thunder Wave user will usually do the trick.[3]

  • Question
What can I do if I killed Zapdos and didn't save it in Pokemon FireRed?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
You only have one chance to catch him. If you've killed him, the only way to get another chance at catching him is through resetting a save point previous to you killing Zapdos.
  • Question
Can I catch Zapdos with a Pokeball?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
It's possible, but much more challenging than with an Ultra Ball or a Great Ball. You will need a lot of Pokeballs.
  • Question
What happens if Zapdos fainted and I forgot to save before the battle?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
If you have not advanced too much in the game or have not done any transcendental accomplishment such as defeating the Elite Four for the first time or captured Mewtwo, turn off the game and start over from your last saving point.

Tips from our Readers

  • Try to clear silph co first so you can catch him with the master ball. If you have a friend who’s willing to trade master balls to your game you can catch all 3 legendary birds in one playthrough.
  • Bring Rock type Pokemon with the lightning rod ability, and use other Pokemon to damage, freeze, paralyze and put Zapdos to sleep.
  • Don't use a grass, ground, flying, fire or ice type Pokemon.
  • Use Dugtrio's magnitude.
