How to Fix Voice Chat Problems in Fortnite

Is your mic not working on Fortnite? If you can't hear others, or if others can't hear you, you may have the wrong voice settings applied on your device. Here's how to troubleshoot Fortnite voice chat when it's not working on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch.

Quick Fixes for Fortnite Voice Chat Issues

If you're having issues with Voice Chat on Fortnite, open your Voice Chat settings and select the proper channel. Make sure to increase the voice volume and turn off Push to Talk. If you're using PlayStation or Xbox, leave any open Party Chats on your console.

Leave console Party Chat.

Make sure you're not in any Party Chats on your console. If you're in the native Xbox or PlayStation voice chat, it will override Fortnite's voice chat and prevent you from connecting.
- Open the Party Chat menu on your console and make sure you're not in a party. This includes parties with just yourself.

Make sure you're on the correct channel.

Check if you're on the right voice chat channel. There are two channels you can use: Party Channel and Game Channel. Party Channel refers to the players you're queued up with in the lobby, while Game Channel refers to the team you're with during Duos, Trios, or Squads.
- To check, open the social menu.
- Select the microphone icon in the side panel.
- At the top, select Game Channel or Party Channel.

Change your Voice Options.

Adjust your Voice Options. You can change who hears you, voice volume, voice method, and preferred channel. One of these options may prevent you from being heard or hearing others.^{[1]

- To change it, open the social menu.
- Select the microphone icon in the side panel.
- At the bottom, select Voice Chat to toggle who hears you (ex: Friends Only).
- Select a Voice Volume greater than 50%.
- Select Voice Method to toggle off or on Push to Talk.
- Select Preferred Channel to select Party or Game.

Check your device's privacy settings.

Check your device's settings and make sure Fortnite has microphone access. You can usually find this in the Security or Voice section.

Try a different headset or microphone.

If you have another pair you can borrow, try using it to see if your headset or console/PC is the issue. If the headset works, it's likely your headset is damaged.

Restart your router.

Some users reported a simple router restart fixed their microphone not working in Fortnite.

Update your device.

Updates include important bug fixes, so make sure your PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch is updated to the latest version.

Clear your cache (Xbox).

Clear your Xbox cache. This involves powering off your Xbox in a specific way. Do the following:
- Press and hold the Xbox's power button until it turns off.
- Remove the power cable.
- Press and hold the power button for a few seconds, then release (5-6 times).
- Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds.
- Connect the power cable again.
- Turn the Xbox back on and try voice chat again.

Adjust the DNS settings (Xbox).

Change your Xbox's DNS settings. Before you change it, write down the original DNS settings so you can change it back if this method doesn't work. Do the following:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Navigate to System > Settings > Network > Select Network Settings > Advanced Settings.
- Select DNS settings.
- Select Manual.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for Primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for Secondary DNS.
- If asked, set MTU to 1473.
- Try voice chat again.

Adjust the DNS settings (PlayStation).

Change your PlayStation's DNS settings. Before you change it, write down the original DNS settings so you can change it back if this method doesn't work. Do the following:
- Navigate to Settings > Network > Setup internet connection.
- Select Wifi or LAN.
- Select Custom setup.
- Select Automatic IP address settings (do not specify a DHCP hostname).
- Select Manual for DNS Settings.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for Primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for Secondary DNS.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
- Try voice chat again.

Adjust the DNS settings (Switch).

Change your Nintendo Switch's DNS settings. Before you change it, write down the original DNS settings so you can change it back if this method doesn't work. Do the following:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Internet > Internet Settings.
- Select your internet connection and select Change Settings.
- Select Manual for DNS Settings.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for Primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for Secondary DNS.
- Ignore MTU settings and toggle off Proxy Settings.
- Try voice chat again.

Check your time zone settings.

If this is incorrect, you may have trouble connecting to voice chat. On Windows, you can adjust your time zone settings by searching "Date & time" in the Start menu.^{[2]

Check for parental controls.

In this case, ask the account holder to check the Voice Chat settings in the Parental Controls menu. It must be set to Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everybody.
