Recognize that, during this time, there are so many hormones in a woman's body that can make her more irritable, more on edge, and more emotional, so don’t take it personally. Next, really ask her what she needs. Say something like, “Hey, I know you might be emotional during this time, is there anything that I can do?” And then help her in that situation. It would also be smart to know your partner’s cycle and have it in your own calendar, so you can be a little bit more prepared with what you can do on your end to help her.

Exactly what an individual wants or needs when menstruating is going to vary person-to-person, based on factors like their gender-identity, unique symptom set, personality, and more. With that, the best way to support your partner when they are on their period is ask them how they might want to be supported. While some might feel cared for by having a bath run for them, others might want their partner to run out and get whatever food they are craving.

Other potential acts of kindness someone who is menstruating might enjoy include: warming a heating pad, gifting CBD balm, making tea, bringing them over-the-counter painkillers, and generally offering patience and kindness as they navigate discomfort.

First and foremost, if your girlfriend is on her period, you can help by being supportive and understanding. She may be experiencing physical symptoms like cramps, bloating, or fatigue, and she might also feel a little more down, irritable, or anxious than usual. With all of this in mind, your patience and emotional support can go a really long way to help her feel better. Here are some other things you can do when your girlfriend is on her period:
  • Get her a heating pad and/or over-the-counter pain medicine to help her manage cramps.
  • Take some things off her to-do list (like cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping, etc.) so she can rest.
  • Surprise her with her favorite snack, dessert, or takeout food.
  • Suggest a relaxing and cozy activity, like having a movie marathon together.
