It's never fun when your girlfriend is mad at you, but every couple has disagreements. You'll both get through it! Here are some tips for how to respond when your girlfriend is upset with you:
  • If she asks for space, give it to her. It can be tempting to insist on fixing the problem immediately. But it's common, and even healthy, for someone to want to take some space after an argument. Your girlfriend may be less upset after a few hours or days apart.
  • Let her vent. If she's mad at you, she might just want to vent to you about it while you patiently listen. Let her explain how she feels and why without interrupting.
  • Try to see things from her perspective. It's easy to get defensive when someone's mad at you, but try to see where she's coming from and why she's upset. It may help you both resolve the issue more quickly.
  • If you've done something wrong, give her a sincere apology. Don't just say "I'm sorry you're mad." If you messed up, take accountability for your words or actions.
  • Show her you've changed. If you've done something to upset her, try not to do it again. An apology is only effective if you make an effort to change your behavior.

I agree that you’ve got to be prepared to sit and listen. Expect her to need to talk out her feelings and go through the process of working it out, because she doesn't want it to happen again. She wants you to understand how she was hurt and why she wasn't being heard and understood. And even if you may be thinking, “But I am right,” you've just got to let it go. If you want to have a relationship with people, you can't be "right" all the time. It's more about choosing connection over being right, and if she's worth it to you, listen to her express herself and let her feel heard and understood.
