Elf Naming Conventions in DnD

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Elves have a variety of names based on their age and family. Garvin says, “Elves in Dungeons & Dragons have specific naming conventions that set them apart from other races. In particular, elves have a variety of names depending both on family and age. When elves are born, they have a child name, given to them by their parents, which is often short and simple, but also soft and elegant. Once an elf reaches 100 years old, they choose an adult name for themselves, which reflects their personality or pays homage to someone they respect.”[5]
    • Garvin says they also have a family surname (similar to a typical last name) that has a deeper meaning or a poetic metaphor. He says that elves also have a secret name that they use privately around their family.[6]
    • Garvin says young elves need a child name, family surname, and a secret name. He shares examples like Laelith Swiftbreeze, Elthuriel Leafdancer, Shaelith Morningsong, Sylvie Breezewalker, Arwyn Moonwhisper.[7]
    • Adult elves need an adult name, family surname, and a secret name, Garvin explains. He shares examples like Elisa Brushsinger, Alfie Thornblade, Raela Grovespotter.[8]
  2. 2
Choose distinguished names that reflect your elf’s personality. “When choosing your family surname, consider something that sounds dignified and fancy, for example Silverblade or Arrowheart,” Garvin suggests. “Something that conveys a warrior spirit but also displays the mystery, elegance, and poise that elves are often known to have.”[9]
    • For your adult name: Garvin recommends choosing something personal and meaningful that relates to your character since this it’s a self-chosen name. “This name can either be strong and dignified, like Lolthorn, or soft and melodic like Aurial or Ryelai,” Garvin says.[10]
    • For your secret name: Garvin says you may go your whole campaign without using this name because you keep it secret. “Try to choose something meaningful with a similar feeling to the other names for your character,” he recommends.[11]
