Buy the newest CR troops the quickest and most efficient way

Heroes are the newest troop type introduced in Clash Royale. Unlike every other champion in the game, heroes have active abilities that you can deploy whenever you see fit after placing the unit on the field. There are only four heroes right now, but Supercell is sure to release more over the next year or two. We’ll break down what makes these units unique and how you can acquire them as quickly and easily as possible.

How to Get Heroes in Clash Royale

Heroes cost 200 Hero Fragments each, and you can only unlock heroes after beating Arena 15. To obtain the Hero Fragments you need, you can:

  • Open Hero Chests.
  • Open Lucky Chests.
  • Continue progressing and beating arenas.
  • Buy the Royale Pass and obtain the rewards.
  • Compete in special events.

How to Unlock Heroes

  1. If you’re looking for the heroes in the store and you aren’t even level 15 yet, just keep playing the game. You’ll earn the first hero slot once you achieve Arena 15.
    • You unlock a second hero slot at Arena 25. You’ll only be able to equip one hero from level 15-25, but that doesn’t mean you can’t unlock all of the heroes in the meantime.
  2. Like any classic gacha game, Clash Royale allows players to purchase loot boxes that contain the currency needed to unlock Heroes. In this case, you must acquire 200 “hero fragments” to unlock each hero. We’ll cover how to get the currency you need to buy the heroes below.[1]

How to Get Hero Fragments

  1. Hero Boxes are a special kind of chest that appear as rewards for completing quests, advancing in the battle pass, or participating in special events. They’re the main way you’ll obtain Hero Fragments.[2]
    • You cannot buy Hero Boxes directly. Unfortunately, you’ll have to unlock the boxes organically.
  2. Lucky Chests are the traditional, standard chests that you unlock in the game for winning, completing events, etc. While they won’t normally carry Hero Fragments, there is a fringe chance for Hero Fragments to appear randomly.[3]
    • This is not a reliable way to unlock a large number of hero fragments, so treat it as more of a pleasant surprise whenever you get any.
  3. Pass Royale is the name for the battle pass in Clash Royale. It has two tiers, a free side and a paid path where you get additional rewards as you play. The paid tier typically costs $12 per season, but that’s subject to change. Regardless, you’ll find hero fragments on the pass.[4]
    • If you want the heroes ASAP, buying the pass is probably the most efficient option. We recommend not spending any money on Clash Royale since it’s so expensive (it takes over $1,000 to buy a fully unlocked account).https://www.youtube.com/shorts/pTS3OKwgO7o?t=2 That said, if you do want to spend money on the game to unlock heroes, your best bet is likely paying for the upgraded game pass.
  4. Beating and unlocking the different arenas will reward you with hero boxes and hero fragments (in addition to other rewards). The hero stuff won’t start showing up until Arena 15, but after that, you’ll be raking in the rewards after you beat each arena.[5]
  5. The first hero unlock is free as part of the December hero event, but Supercell have said that they’re planning on doing more special events like that in the future, so don’t worry if you missed the first one. Check in every day or so to make sure you aren’t missing out on any upcoming events.[6]
    • This will be especially important in 2026. Clash Royale only released heroes at the end of 2025, so if there were ever a time they’d be promoting the new troops, it’d be 2026.

What are heroes?

  1. Added in December of 2025, heroes are a brand-new card type available in Clash Royale. Well, technically not brand new—every hero is just an “upgraded” champion, but the card type is new! Heroes will function like champions, where you get to choose up to two of them to “lead” your deck. This introduces a whole new strategy element to the game, and it’s sure to shake up the meta considerably.[7]
    • Heroes are unique because of their activated abilities. Every card in Clash Royale is automated. You select where it goes, you drop the card, then the unit automatically moves and attacks. Not anymore. Heroes have active abilities you get to use when you choose by tapping their ability button at the bottom of the screen.
