Content creator Tobi Nwodo explains the viral leaf relationship test on TikTok
PDF download Download Article

The "I found a leaf" trend on TikTok is a great example of why relationship tests are fun, but also controversial. In this test, a woman shows her male partner a leaf she "found" on the ground, then gauges his reaction. Most TikTokers who do this test are parodying bad relationships or just joking around. But for those who take it seriously, is there any truth to it? Keep reading as we explain the leaf relationship test, reveal the "right" answer someone should give to pass the test, and explore the test’s accuracy.

What does "I found a leaf" mean on TikTok?

Content creator Tobi Nwodo says the leaf relationship test is when a girl mentions a leaf, and tests to see if their boyfriend will take an interest in the leaf the same way they do. If he's enthusiastic about the leaf, it means their relationship is strong. If he doesn't care, it means their relationship is doomed.

"I Found a Leaf" TikTok Meaning

  1. To perform the leaf test, one person (stereotypically a woman) shows their romantic partner a leaf they found outside. Then, they gauge their partner’s reaction to see if they'll take interest in the leaf, says Nwodo. If the partner doesn't show much of a reaction, or aren't as enthusiastic as the person wants, they’re supposedly “not the one,” according to Nwodo.[1] If the partner shows a lot of enthusiasm about the leaf, this is supposedly a sign that they care a lot about their partner and their interests. It also means their relationship is strong and successful.
    • Some TikTok creators do the leaf test to make fun of how shallow relationship tests are. This post by @thestandardta, which has over 19.5 million views, is a good example. The young man and woman in the TikTok are known for making cringey couple videos. They're parodying the shallow types of people who take the leaf test seriously.

What's the "right" answer to the leaf test?

  1. Think of it as if you wanted to talk to your partner about something that interests you, like baseball, or a book you love, or a political topic. You would want them to listen to you, ask questions about it, and support it. By engaging with you on a topic you're clearly fascinated by, they'd be showing that they respect and appreciate you. That’s the sort of response and reaction that this TikTok trend is “testing.”
    • In this TikTok posted by @legallyfallon_, the guy "passes" the leaf test because he gives his full attention to his girlfriend and her leaf. He even goes so far as to suggest taking the leaf home and hanging it on the wall.
    • Even though it's just a parody, the TikTok by @thestandardta we referenced above is an example of how a guy might "fail" the leaf test. Instead of showing interest in the leaf itself, the boyfriend tells his girlfriend that she's beautiful (like the leaf). The girlfriend's face drops in "disappointment" (but since it's a parody, her reaction is fake).

Is the leaf test accurate?

  1. If your boyfriend isn't very excited or interested when you show him a leaf, there could be several reasons for his lack of reaction. One possibility is that he might know about the leaf trend already and decide to play a joke on you by not doing what you want him to do. Alternatively, he might not like the idea that you're filming his reaction for TikTok, where lots of strangers will judge him. Lastly, he might be tired or distracted, rather than disinterested in whatever you have to say.
    • It's unlikely that he doesn't love you based on this test alone, especially if he shows his devotion to you in other ways. It is important to take an active interest in your partner’s needs, feelings, and bids for connection, but judging your entire relationship on this singular test may not be a good idea.[2]
    • In this video by @woahlyssaa, for instance, the TikTok creator explains that she tried to do the leaf test on her boyfriend by texting him a picture of a leaf, but his response was, "I saw the tiktok."

Should you use relationship tests?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Most relationship tests, like the leaf test, are easy to fail, so they're not an accurate way to evaluate the quality of your relationship. If you perform a relationship test from TikTok, make it fun and lighthearted, and avoid treating it as a serious litmus test. It's also a good idea to let your partner know what you're doing. They might feel disrespected if you test them without them knowing and then post about it on TikTok.
