Need to add the Indian rupee symbol in Microsoft Word? The new rupee symbol is Unicode compatible and can be inserted into documents with a couple of keyboard shortcuts. This wikiHow shows you how to insert a rupee symbol into a Word document.
Using the Rupee Symbol in Microsoft Word
To insert a rupee symbol in Word, click the Insert tab and select Symbol on the toolbar. Click More symbols, choose (normal text) from the Font menu and Currency symbols from the Subset menu. Select the rupee symbol ₹ from the character list and click Insert.
Steps
Using the Insert Function in Word
-
Click on the Insert tab. This is located in the menu ribbon at the top of the screen when you open Word. Clicking on it pulls up more options.[1]
- If you don't already have a Word document open, open one now. Then, click an empty space in the document; this is where the symbol will go.
- If you're using a Mac, click the Edit menu.
-
Click on Symbol. This is on the right side of the Insert menu, in the middle of a menu box also labeled Symbols. This pulls up another menu.[2]
- If you're using a Mac, select Emoji & Symbols instead.

Select More Symbols in the menu. This pulls up a new dialog box with a grid displaying different special symbols you can insert into your writing.[3]
- If you're using a Mac, expand the window by clicking the button on the top-right.
-
Click on the Font drop-down and select (normal text). You'll need the font set to this to access the Subset drop-down menu.
- If you're using a Mac, skip this step.
-
Click on the Subset drop-down and select Currency Symbols. This option is listed toward the middle of the drop-down menu.
- On Mac, you'll see Currency Symbols in the left sidebar of the Emoji & Symbols menu.
-
Click on the Rupee symbol. This looks like an "R" without the vertical line and with two horizontal lines through the top. It'll be highlighted in dark blue once it's selected.
-
Click Insert. This will insert the Rupee symbol into the document you're writing.
- On Mac, double-click the symbol to add it to the document.
Using the English (India) Keyboard Layout
-
Set your keyboard to the English (India) layout. In order to access the rupee symbol, you’ll need to make sure your keyboard has India set as its region.[4]
-
Windows:
- Type language into the search bar in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Select Language settings in the search results.
- Under the Preferred languages heading, click Add a language.
- In the menu that pops up, scroll through until you find the English section.
- Select English (India).
- Wait until the new layout has been added.
- Set English (India) as your preferred keyboard layout.
-
Mac:
- Click the Apple menu at the top left corner of your screen and select System Settings.
- Select Keyboard from the left menu bar. You will need to scroll down to find it.
- Click Edit next to “Input sources” under the Text Input header.
- Click the + icon in the bottom left corner of the window.
- Select ABC – India and click Add.
- Make sure the switch next to “Show input menu in menu bar” is toggled on.
- Click Done.
- Click the input menu icon at the top right side of your screen (it usually looks like a rectangle containing letters or symbols representing your current keyboard layout, e.g. US for American English). Select the option that says IN ABC – India.
-
Windows:
-
Open a Word document. Once you have the keyboard layout set up, open Word to get started with writing up the document where you want the rupee symbol.
-
Press Ctrl+Alt+4 (Windows) or ` (Mac) to insert a rupee symbol. Once you have your region set to India, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + 4 to pull up the rupee symbol as an alternate character to the dollar sign on a Windows keyboard.
- If you’re on a Mac, you don’t need to use a special key combination! Simply press the key you’d normally use to type the backtick (`) or tilde (~) symbols. This key is located at the top left corner of the keyboard, just below Esc and to the left of the 1/! Key.
- If this doesn't work, make sure English (India) or ABC – India is set as your preferred keyboard layout. You may need to restart your computer to apply these changes.
