Vape pen smells definitely aren’t as strong as smoke smells, but they can still build up and cause the room you vape in—including your bedroom—to have an odor. We talked to expert house cleaners and weed and CBD pros to share the best ways to prevent and fight vape odors quickly. We’ve also got extra tips to keep your room smelling fresh, whether you’ve been vaping or not, so your bedroom is always your zen space. Keep scrolling to learn more!

Best Ways to Eliminate Vape Odor

Cannabis research scientist Riley Kirk, PhD recommends exhaling vapor through a sploof: either make your own out of a toilet paper roll and laundry detergent sheets, or use a commercial product. Other ways to prevent or hide vape smell include:

  • Using an odor-bursting or sanitizing room spray.
  • Keeping your room ventilated with open windows, fans, and/or air purifiers.
  • Absorbing odors with bowls of vinegar, baking soda, or activated charcoal.
  • Covering the smell with subtle candles, essential oils, incense, or air fresheners.

Does vaping leave a lingering smell on walls and furniture?

  1. Vaping marijuana or nicotine produces way less odor than smoking them, but you’re not totally off the hook. With weed vapor, you’re releasing THC and other cannabinoids into the air.[1] While these are less smelly than the sticky volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in weed smoke, the particles can still settle on surfaces (particularly fabric) and leave a slight lingering odor.
    • With nicotine, the flavor plays a big role. Some vapes may produce very little smell, while extra fruity or sweet flavors can leave a much more noticeable odor.[2]
    • According to Dr. Kirk, “Using a vaporizer or dabbing is going to be less smelly than smoking flower, which is the most stanky of the methods.”[3]

Eliminating Vape Pen Smell in Your Room

  1. Home cleaning specialist Daniel Olin explains that increasing ventilation helps prevent and remove lingering smells, including vape odors: “You’re going to want to change your air filters and open two windows, or a window and a door across from each other to get a draft going.”[4] Keeping your room breezy and ventilated will help disperse the vape cloud more quickly and keep the odor from clinging to surfaces.
  2. Air purifiers or filters help clear and freshen the air quickly after a vape puff. They’re especially nifty if your room doesn’t have windows or good ventilation. Make sure that the purifier is running before you vape—it’s more effective at killing odors when it can filter the vapor cloud right away, instead of letting it settle on a surface first.[6]
  3. “A sploof is essentially when you take some sort of cylindrical object, even something like a toilet paper roll, and you stuff it with laundry detergent sheets and blow the smoke through it so that it doesn't get your room all smelly,” Dr. Kirk explains. “They actually make modern versions of this that are small and portable and much more sexy than a toilet paper roll.”[7]
    • You can buy sploofs with replaceable filters online, or make one yourself with household objects for virtually no cost.
    • If you can, exhale through an open window or into a vent (whether you’re using a sploof or not) to further mask the odor.
  4. CBD expert Lauren Forsch recommends “a great product called No Smell No Tell from Long Island. It was formulated by a scientist and eats the smoke or vapor. It’s silicone-based, so you just spray it in the air, and the odor disappears.”[8] Ozium air sanitizing spray is another popular remedy that’s effective at eliminating smoke and vape smells.
    • Some online forums suggest using an ozone generator to reduce vape smells indoors; however, there is no evidence that safe levels of ozone are effective in removing most odors. Be cautious using these, as it’s difficult to control ozone exposure, and inhaling excess amounts can lead to harmful respiratory effects.[9]
  5. White vinegar, baking soda, activated charcoal, or even houseplants can trap and eliminate vape odors with minimal effort on your part. Cleaning expert Florisa-Leila Ramos says, “You can deodorize the room by placing small bowls of white vinegar or baking soda where the smell is strongest.”[10] Just change out the bowls every few days if you regularly vape in your room, or pour them out once the odor has disappeared.
    • If you suspect the vape smell is clinging to a wall or hard surface, house cleaning professional Kadi Dulude says to “Wash all possible surfaces with pure white vinegar. It will smell strongly like vinegar while you’re cleaning, but once that smell goes, it also tends to take all bad smells with it.”[11]
    • Activated charcoal often comes in sheets or sachets that make it easy to inconspicuously place around your room.
    • Snake plants, spider plants, peace lilies, and pothos plants are common houseplants that can support clean, odorless air (although they likely won’t be able to get rid of vape smell all on their own).
  6. Dr. Kirk notes that incense and other similar methods can counteract the odor a bit, but they’re not powerful enough to completely eliminate the cannabis smell.[12] In some cases, a super heavy candle or air freshener scent can be a dead giveaway that you’re trying to hide an odor. Choose subtle, fresh scents like linen, lavender, lemongrass, eucalyptus, or peppermint to combat the smell without drawing too much attention.[13]
    • Or, try scents that “complement” the vape smell to hide it even better. Patchouli, sandalwood, and bergamot are common enough scents that they won’t draw too much attention.
  7. Not all vape clouds smell the same, and the amount of odor that lingers depends on how pungent your e-juice is. Certain nicotine vape flavors are especially likely to leave noticeable odors. These include fruity or sugary flavors, like berries, watermelon, or dessert-themed cartridges.[14] If you notice your vape is leaving strong smells, try switching flavors or strains to find something more conspicuous.
    • If your vape has multiple temperature settings, try using low heat, which produces less of an odor than high heat.
  8. Cleaning specialist Ahmed Mezil recommends “using baking soda or carpet powder, which you can find at any hardware store,” to remove odors from carpet and fabric surfaces.[15] Just sprinkle the baking soda liberally over smelly areas and let it sit for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to absorb odor particles. Then, just vacuum up the powder.
    • If baking soda isn’t enough, try steam cleaning your carpet and bedding for a more powerful (but labor-intensive) solution.
  9. Of course, the easiest way to keep other people you live with from smelling your vape is to use it while they’re gone. If you know you’ll have the house or apartment to yourself for a while, try to vape with enough time left to air out your room before they return.
    • Remember to change your clothes afterward, too. The vape smell can cling to clothes (especially strong nicotine vape flavors), so even if your room smells fresh, your outfit could be a giveaway!
  10. “Of course, edibles don’t smell at all,” Dr. Kirk explains.[16] Whether you prefer to buy gummies at a dispensary or make your own edibles at home, this is the least smelly way to enjoy weed indoors. (Just keep in mind that the process of making the edibles can definitely stink up your kitchen!)
    • Remember, the only 100% foolproof way to avoid vape smell in your room is to not vape in your room. “I would recommend going outside if you’re going to vape or smoke and you’re trying to avoid that smell,” says Dr. Kirk.[17]

More Tips to Keep Your Room Smelling Fresh

PDF download Download Article
  1. The tips above are helpful for combating vapes and regular old room stink. But if you’re sure that you’ve conquered the vape odor and suspect there’s something else causing a stench, try these additional room-freshening tips:[18]
    • Wash your bedding once a week. Your sheets can absorb BO, sweat, and debris just like your clothes can.
    • Let sweaty or dirty clothes dry fully before you throw them in the hamper. When clothes are wet and wadded up, they can start to smell like mildew. (It’s also helpful to not let too much dirty laundry pile up before you wash it!)
    • Dust and vacuum regularly, including places you might not think to clean often (like under the bed or behind furniture).
    • Declutter your room to allow for more air flow and ventilation.
    • Wash your pet’s bedding regularly if they sleep in your room with you.
    • Clean your mattress twice a year. Vacuum it all over (including in all the crevices) and sprinkle it with baking soda for an hour to deodorize it, then vacuum up the powder.[19]
    • Hang scented sachets with your clothes or add scented adhesive pads inside drawers to keep your clothes smelling fresh.
