For a variety of reasons, your parents may see it necessary to take away your technology. Usually, this is a punishment, or because you are addicted. Either way, it probably sucks, and you are probably wondering what you can do to avoid it happening again! This article will give you step-by-step instructions on not losing your devices again, and if you have already lost them, how to get them back!

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:

Keeping your devices

  1. Stay Out of Trouble. A very common punishment by parents is a technology ban, so stay out of trouble to avoid giving them a reason to ban technology. Talk to authority figures (parents, teachers, etc) with respect, stay out of fights, and follow the house rules.
    • Sometimes trouble is inevitable. A sibling may lie and say you were breaking a rule, but having a good history will make it easier to prove their lies!
  2. It is very easy to become addicted to technology, and parents hate it when this happens, and will probably use it as a reason to ban technology. Set a limit on how much you can and can't use your device a day, and follow it.

Have other things to do. You don't want your parents to think that your phone is your only entertainment, because then they will always ban it as a punishment. Have other hobbies, like TV, sports, and hanging out with friends. This will both show that you aren't addicted to technology, while giving them more of a headache when deciding how to punish you!
  4. Politeness will give your parents one less reason to take away your devices! Refrain from using electronics at the dinner table or while talking. Don't use them in class and keep them on silent where possible.
  5. 5
Use your devices responsibly. Your parents may give irresponsibility as a reason for banning technology, so be responsible! Keep them charged, answer your parents' text messages and calls promptly, don't stay up all night talking to friends, and take good care of your device.

Get your devices back

  1. If, despite your best efforts, your parents still decide to ban technology, there is still hope. Start by following the rules of your punishment. Don't take your device back, do any extra chores you have been told to do, and don't go out if you've been told not to.
  2. 2
Behave yourself. This may sound like a repeat of the above step, but it is also important not to break the normal rules again; otherwise, your punishment may be extended. Follow all and any house rules along with the rules of your punishment. For example, if you aren't normally allowed out past 10 pm, don't turn up at 11 pm.
  3. 3
Right the wrong. If it is possible, you can attempt to correct the behavior that got you punished. This might not always get the punishment lifted early, but it will show your parents that you are using the punishment to learn. Complete the chore you didn't do, or get a better grade.
    • Again, this might not get the punishment lifted early, but it will show responsibility and is a good starting ground for future good behavior.
  4. Once everyone has calmed down, usually after a day or two, ask your parents if you can have a lesser punishment, or if it can be removed entirely. This may not always work, though, and if you ask too soon, your parents may think you haven't learnt anything.
    • This will typically work best after a few days, once everyone cools down and has assessed the situation.
    • Combine this step with good behavior for the highest chance of success.
  5. 5
Behave yourself once you get the devices back. So you have the devices back, but you want to avoid losing them. Don't repeat the previous behavior that got them taken away, and continue following the other rules.
